BREAKING: Chargers GM Breaks Silence on Khalil Mack’s Future with the Team
For the first time in his 11-year career, Khalil Mack is set to enter free agency. Throughout his career, he has been so dominant that his teams have always secured him with long-term deals before other franchises even had a chance to negotiate. However, after what was arguably the least productive season of his career, the situation is different this time. Despite his decline in numbers, the Chargers remain in contact with him and are hopeful they can reach an agreement. General manager Joe Hortiz believes Mack may simply want to explore free agency, as he has never had the opportunity in over a decade of playing in the league.
During an interview at the NFL Draft Combine, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport spoke with Hortiz about Mack’s future. The Chargers’ GM emphasized his desire to bring back the veteran pass rusher, expressing gratitude for Mack’s leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the team.

While Mack didn’t produce the stats he hoped for last season, the possibility of Joey Bosa being released adds urgency for Los Angeles to keep him. Mack has earned significant contracts in the past, but with 26 impending free agents, the Chargers may struggle to afford him if he seeks one final big payday. However, having already made nearly $200 million in his career, Mack could be open to taking a discount to remain with one of the league’s top defensive units. Additionally, his age and declining sack numbers might limit his market value, making teams hesitant to offer a massive contract.
Regardless of how Mack’s situation unfolds, Hortiz faces a challenging offseason, balancing efforts to retain key players while improving the roster. Mack’s decision will be the first major development in this process, and as discussions continue at the Combine, more clarity on his future could emerge soon.
