With their starting quarterback set to return for at least another season, the Rams can now shift focus to his backup.

On Monday, coach Sean McVay confirmed the team’s interest in re-signing Jimmy Garoppolo for a second year.

“We would love to have him back,” McVay said. “I’ve been focused on sorting out Matthew [Stafford]’s situation, but that’s definitely our hope. Of course, Jimmy has earned the right to explore other opportunities, but if you’re asking whether I want him back working with [quarterbacks coach] Dave Ragone, Matthew, and the rest of the group, the answer is absolutely yes.”

Garoppolo was briefly the highest-paid quarterback in league history seven years ago, signing a $27.5 million annual deal before Kirk Cousins surpassed it with a $28 million contract. The 49ers moved on from him after the 2022 season, leading to a stint with the Raiders, where he started just six games.

At 33, Garoppolo started the Rams’ 2024 regular-season finale against the Seahawks, filling in while key starters rested for the playoffs. He completed 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a 30-25 loss.

The Rams also have Stetson Bennett on the roster, who remains under contract for two more years on his rookie deal.
