Nearly a week has passed since the Washington Commanders completed their trade for star wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick. This move was crucial for Washington, which previously had only two wide receivers under contract for next season—Terry McLaurin and Luke McCaffrey. Since acquiring Samuel, the Commanders have re-signed K.J. Osborn and Noah Brown but lost Dyami Brown (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Olamide Zaccheaus (Chicago Bears) in free agency.

San Francisco 49ers' Deebo Samuel seeks trade; Washington Commanders interested?

Samuel, who recorded 51 receptions for 670 yards, added 136 rushing yards, and scored four total touchdowns (three receiving, one rushing) last season with San Francisco, is expected to be Washington’s No. 2 receiver alongside McLaurin, who has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last five seasons. His arrival has sparked excitement on social media, and on Tuesday, the team officially announced that Samuel will wear No. 1—the same number he donned in college at South Carolina and in his final season with the 49ers after switching from No. 19, which he had worn for his first five NFL seasons.

Samuel aligns perfectly with the vision head coach Dan Quinn outlined at the NFL Combine before the trade. “We want to attack, man,” Quinn said. “So, however we can find ways to go do that, we will. … Finding guys that can attack, play in space, play with quickness, be violent in the cuts—those are things we want across all positions, whether it’s running back, tight end, or receiver. We’re going to keep finding guys who fit that mold and can attack and be aggressive.”
