The New York Mets are gearing up for another thrilling season following their 2024 NLCS appearance. The team bolstered its lineup by signing star outfielder Juan Soto while retaining power-hitting first baseman Pete Alonso, creating an enticing trio alongside shortstop Francisco Lindor. With all three players healthy, the Mets are in a strong position to start the regular season on a high note. Their campaign kicks off on March 27 with a three-game road series against the Houston Astros.

However, the pitching staff presents some concerns. Clay Holmes, who led the league with 13 blown saves last season, is slated to start on Opening Day. Meanwhile, Kodai Senga, expected to lead the rotation, is returning from an injury that limited him to just 5.1 innings in 2024.

Adding to their challenges, left-hander Sean Manaea will miss the start of the season due to an oblique injury. This is a setback considering his strong performance last year, but Mets manager Carlos Mendoza provided an encouraging update via SNY on Wednesday, stating that Manaea has resumed throwing and has worked up to 90 feet.

According to SNY, Manaea is expected to return by mid-to-late April. The 33-year-old, projected as the Mets’ No. 2 starter behind Senga, posted a 12-6 record with a 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 32 appearances last season. After spending six seasons with the Athletics, he was traded to the Padres in 2022. He later signed a two-year deal with the Giants before opting out and joining the Mets in January 2024. Manaea then opted out again last November before signing a three-year, $75 million contract with New York in December.
