REPORT: 49ers Forced to Trade Brandon Aiyuk
Conflicts are a natural part of relationships, especially in sports.
It’s not uncommon for them to occur. At times, these conflicts can help the relationship grow, but other times, they can make things worse. The latter seems to be the case with the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk.
The drawn-out contract negotiations for Aiyuk’s extension last offseason were awkward. As usual, the 49ers made the mistake of waiting too long, which allowed Aiyuk to ask for more money.
However, Aiyuk’s approach to the situation left a negative impression on both fans and likely the team’s executives. He’s now seen as somewhat of a diva, which is partly true.
Some of his behavior on social media during the contract discussions was over the top, but that’s the reality for many professional athletes today.
In the end, the 49ers gave in to Aiyuk’s demands, but soon regretted it. Reports have resurfaced about the 49ers’ displeasure with Aiyuk’s extension.

This has led to speculation about a potential trade, with this being the second consecutive offseason he’s been linked to one. While Dianna Russini from The Athletic doesn’t think a trade will happen, she acknowledges that the 49ers might want one.
“I don’t get the sense that it’s a reality,” she said. “I’m sure the 49ers would like to do it because of the finances. Why would a team be so open about this? There must be something else.”
I also doubt the 49ers will trade Aiyuk. It would be a risky move and could backfire. However, if the relationship continues to deteriorate, they might be forced into it.
It’s possible that the relationship is beyond repair. When Aiyuk signed his contract, it seemed like there was still tension. He may have felt slighted by the drawn-out negotiations before Week 1 of the season. Additionally, the 49ers indirectly criticized him by leaking contract details and trade offers.

Now, this offseason, the same negative narrative is resurfacing. The 49ers are acting like a displeased partner, and they’re openly expressing their dissatisfaction.
Aiyuk is likely aware of all the reports and rumors. There’s no way he’s happy about it, and this probably pushes him further away from the team.
At this point, it wouldn’t be surprising if the relationship is beyond repair. This could lead to another awkward situation heading into training camp.
When a partner is openly expressing discontent, it’s often a sign that a breakup is coming. That breakup might happen before Aiyuk is due a hefty roster bonus.
The 49ers would be lucky to get more than a fourth-round pick in return. But they might be willing to accept that just to get his contract off the books and move on.
If the relationship is bad enough, Aiyuk will likely be traded. If he stays, it will take a lot of work from Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch to repair the damage.
