Wayne Rooney: Sheffield Wednesday must swoop for 22-year-old ‘hero’

Sheffield Wednesday is facing a significant turnover this summer with eleven players out of contract, although remaining in the Championship doesn’t guarantee their retention. Reports suggest that contracts will be offered to players like Di’Shon Bernard and Barry Bannan, but the club is still expected to part ways with several others.

Barry Bannan 'confident' he will be at Sheffield Wednesday next season and hoping to stay beyond retirement

While the club will be relieved to shed some surplus players, this mass exodus will leave them thin in crucial areas, particularly with their entire midfield set to depart. Although Bannan looks set to remain, the midfield vacuum poses a concern.

Danny Rohl’s side will need to replenish their squad by bringing in new talent, although financial constraints may pose a challenge. However, a potential solution could be found in League One, with Louie Sibley possibly available on a free transfer.

Sibley rose to prominence with Derby County during the 2019-20 season, emerging as one of the most promising young talents in the EFL. Previously attracting interest from West Ham and Arsenal, the midfielder was highly regarded by former manager Wayne Rooney. However, despite Derby’s strong position in the table, Sibley’s form has seemingly declined this season, despite being considered a ‘hero’ at just 22 years old.
