BREAKING: UNC Football secures commitment from Maryland transfer shortly after landing WR Adrian Wilson
Hailing from Allentown, Pennsylvania, Lavon Johnson began his college football journey with the Maryland Terrapins, spending two seasons with the program. The 6-foot-3, 320-pound nose tackle was projected to contend for a starting role heading into the 2025 season, but he opted instead to enter the transfer portal.
While at Maryland, Johnson served primarily in a rotational role, posting 14 tackles and one quarterback hurry across eight appearances. He’s more effective against the run than rushing the passer, but with more than the 165 snaps he logged previously, he has the potential to develop into a more complete player.
Not every portal addition needs to be a headline-maker. Strong programs are built with solid depth, and Johnson is exactly that—a valuable piece who can contribute to the bigger picture.
At North Carolina, Johnson is expected to be part of the defensive line rotation in 2025. And with the Belichick family on staff, there’s always a chance they can tap into his full potential during his time in Chapel Hill.
