West Virginia football added a second wide receiver from the spring transfer portal on Sunday.
Following the addition of former UNC receiver Christian Hamilton last week, the Mountaineers landed their latest target in South Carolina State transfer Justin-Smith Brown. The 6’1″ wideout, originally from Cocoa, Florida, played at Space Coast High School but went unrated as a high school prospect. He has spent his college career to this point at South Carolina State.
Brown first saw the field in 2022, recording five catches for 90 yards and adding three carries for 60 yards and a rushing touchdown. He made a noticeable leap the following season, finishing with 22 receptions for 357 yards and three scores.
His breakout came in 2024, when he totaled 749 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 54 catches. Brown also recorded two games with over 100 receiving yards and narrowly missed a third. He arrives at WVU with one year of eligibility remaining.

During spring practices, Head Coach Rich Rodriguez emphasized the need for “more competition” among the wide receivers, while position coach Ryan Garrett noted late in spring that there were “no starters” yet. Rodriguez also mentioned plans to explore the transfer portal at nearly every position post-spring, suggesting concerns about the unit’s overall depth. Brown’s addition is part of an effort to address those concerns heading into the season.
