Virginia Tech added Oklahoma State quarterback Garret Rangel to its roster on Wednesday. Rangel, who has two years of eligibility remaining, spent three seasons with the Cowboys and appeared in 13 games. He redshirted in 2022 after playing in four games, with limited appearances in the following two seasons. During his time at OSU, he completed 93 of 180 passes (51.7%) for 1,075 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while also rushing for 107 yards on 41 carries. According to PFF, he logged 363 career snaps, with most coming in 2022.
Rangel first saw extended action as a true freshman when he stepped in after Spencer Sanders’ injury, throwing for 304 yards and two touchdowns at Kansas, and adding 229 yards and two scores in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against Wisconsin. He played briefly in the 2023 season opener versus Central Arkansas, completing 10-of-15 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, but saw limited playing time afterward behind veteran Alan Bowman.
In 2024, Rangel had a notable outing at BYU, completing 6-of-9 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 77 yards — including a 54-yard run — before suffering a broken collarbone. He returned in the spring and started the Cowboys’ spring game, going 5-of-6 for 58 yards. Following coaching changes under Mike Gundy, Rangel chose to transfer — one of two OSU quarterbacks to do so.

Now at Virginia Tech, Rangel reunites with offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, who had previously recruited him while at Tulsa. A four-star recruit out of Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas, Rangel ranked as the No. 26 QB in the 2022 class and had drawn interest from programs like Houston, Northwestern, Utah, and Vanderbilt. In high school, he threw for 9,333 yards and 101 touchdowns and was also a standout in basketball and track.

Rangel becomes Virginia Tech’s 29th transfer portal addition this offseason and the first quarterback. He joins a QB room featuring Kyron Drones, Pop Watson, and freshmen A.J. Brand and Kelden Ryan. Rangel is expected to compete with Watson for the backup job in 2025 and potentially for the starting role in 2026 once Drones departs.
