Trey Botts played football during his college years at Colorado State-Pueblo, participating in 43 games across four seasons. During this time, he made 58 solo tackles, 95 assisted tackles, 25.5 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, and recovered a fumble. In his senior year of 2022, he had notable statistics with 23 solo tackles, 43 assisted tackles, 16 tackles for a loss, and 5.5 sacks over 12 games.

He received recognition in the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Honorable Mention in 2021 and 2019, while also earning the title of RMAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2022.

During his pro day, Botts showcased his athleticism with a 4.99-second 40-yard dash, a 30-inch vertical jump, a 9’08” broad jump, a 4.72 shuttle run, and a 7.52 3-cone drill. Additionally, he impressed with 30 reps on the bench press (225 pounds).

In February 2023, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Stars in the 8th round of the USFL but initially aimed to pursue opportunities in the NFL.

Later in 2023, Botts signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent but was waived during final roster cuts. Despite dressing for three preseason games with the Ravens and recording 4 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, and a sack, he was released.

Subsequently, he joined the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL in November. However, due to the merger of the USFL and XFL forming the United Football League, the Stars dissolved, leading to Botts being made available for selection in the UFL Dispersal Draft. On January 15, he was drafted in the 2nd round of the UFL Super Draft by the San Antonio Brahmas. Nevertheless, he was waived by the Brahmas on March 10 as the UFL teams reduced their rosters to 58 players.
