Jermain Defoe aspires to take on the role of Sunderland’s next manager. The former England star, who currently coaches the Spurs Under-18 team, has assembled a support staff and is eager to make a comeback to Wearside.

Defoe, 41, has engaged in extensive discussions with notable figures in football management such as Gareth Southgate, Harry Redknapp, and Steven Gerrard, signaling his readiness to step into a managerial role.

Having made 87 appearances for Sunderland in the Premier League during his playing career, Defoe has a strong affinity for the club. With Tony Mowbray and Michael Beale’s departures, the Mackems are in search of a new leader for the upcoming season.

Defoe expressed his interest, stating, “Why not the Sunderland job? Even during my playing days, I always expressed my desire to manage this club. If given the chance, I wouldn’t hesitate to seize it.”

Defoe declined a lucrative offer from BT Sport to pursue coaching, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to the sport. He enjoys a positive relationship with Sunderland fans and has already lined up Paul Bracewell as his assistant along with two other young coaches.

Reflecting on his coaching journey, Defoe shared insights gained from discussions with prominent managers like Antonio Conte and Gareth Southgate.

He stressed the importance of being deeply invested in the game and expressed his belief in his own capabilities as a future manager.

Defoe acknowledged the challenges faced by black managers in the football industry but remains undeterred, affirming his determination to pursue his coaching ambitions regardless of the statistics. He emphasized his experience working with young players and his passion for coaching as valuable assets.

Expressing his love for football, Defoe highlighted his smooth transition into coaching after retiring from playing. He has actively pursued coaching opportunities, including submitting his CV to various clubs and engaging in conversations to assess his progress in obtaining coaching badges.

Defoe also mentioned his previous experience as a player-coach at Rangers, demonstrating his exposure to high-level coaching environments.
