BREAKING: Ex-Bills Captain Confirms Return to Buffalo with Ambition To End His Career at Buffalo

Micah Hyde wrapped up his NFL career with a final stint as a Buffalo Bill, and his former teammate might be eyeing a similar farewell.

Ex-Bills safety Jordan Poyer expressed this week that he’d love to end his career in Buffalo. After being released last offseason as a cap casualty and signing with the Miami Dolphins, Poyer is once again a free agent — and he’s made it clear he’s hoping for a possible return to the Bills.

Jordan Poyer Not Ready to Retire

In an appearance on Good Morning Football Wednesday, 34-year-old safety Jordan Poyer said he still feels he has something left to give on the field.

“I love the game,” Poyer said. “I’ve been fortunate and blessed to play 12 years, and I’m extremely thankful for that.”

Poyer reflected candidly on a difficult 2024 season, which saw him leave Buffalo for Miami in a move that ultimately didn’t pan out.

“Last year was tough in a lot of ways,” he admitted. “The team didn’t perform well, I didn’t play up to my own expectations, and the transition from Buffalo to Miami wasn’t easy. The cultures were different, the systems were different—it just didn’t work out like anyone hoped. Still, I’m grateful for the experience, for the relationships I built, and for everything that came with it. Would I like to keep playing? Absolutely. What that looks like, we’ll see.”

While he’s open to whatever comes next, Poyer hinted that returning to Buffalo to finish his career would be a dream scenario.

“It’d be dope, it’d be ideal to have a fantasy ending and retire a Bill,” he said. “But who knows? I’m just staying open and enjoying life right now.”

Poyer, a former All-Pro and longtime defensive captain, was a foundational piece of Buffalo’s defensive resurgence after arriving in 2017. Alongside Micah Hyde, he helped end the team’s 17-year playoff drought and solidify the Bills as consistent contenders under GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott.

Bills Added Competition at Safety

Poyer’s potential return to Buffalo comes with uncertainty about what role he might realistically fill. The Bills have already made several moves at the safety position this offseason, signing former Washington Commanders starter Darrick Forrest and potentially grooming 2024 draft pick Cole Bishop for a starting role. Veterans Taylor Rapp, Cam Lewis, and Damar Hamlin also remain on the roster, giving the team depth and experience.

When Micah Hyde rejoined the Bills late in the 2024 season, it was in a limited capacity — added to the practice squad and never elevated for game action. Hyde embraced the mentor role, helping guide younger players like Bishop through the team’s playoff push.

What remains to be seen is whether Poyer, who started 16 games for the Dolphins last season and recorded 98 tackles, would be open to a reduced or mentoring role similar to Hyde’s. Despite his production, a full-time starting spot in Buffalo may not be available — raising the question of whether Poyer’s return would be more about leadership and legacy than on-field impact.
