BREAKING: Mets acquire LHP José Castillo from Diamondbacks

The Mets have added reinforcements to their bullpen by acquiring left-handed pitcher José Castillo from the Diamondbacks in exchange for cash considerations. Castillo has appeared in five games for Arizona this season, posting an 11.37 ERA over 6.1 innings.

Castillo debuted in the majors with the Padres in 2018, delivering a strong rookie campaign with a 3.29 ERA, 2.64 FIP, and a WHIP under 1 across 37 appearances. However, his career since has been derailed by injuries, including a flexor strain, finger issues, and Tommy John surgery, limiting him to just eight big league outings since that season. In 2023 and 2024, Castillo spent most of his time in the minors as he worked back from injury, recording a 3.75 ERA and 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings across 24 games last year.

With Génesis Cabrera as the lone healthy lefty in their bullpen following season-ending surgeries to Danny Young and A.J. Minter—and Brooks Raley not expected back until the summer—Castillo adds depth and flexibility to the Mets’ relief unit.
