REPORT: Tigers Starter to Rejoin Team After Lengthy Rehab

Just one year after sneaking into the playoffs, the Detroit Tigers have emerged as a powerhouse atop the American League this season. Unlike last year’s squad that relied on a late push, this year’s success is fueled by a stellar starting rotation, which currently ranks third in MLB with a 3.31 ERA.

Despite their strong overall showing, the Tigers ran into some turbulence in June. Tarik Skubal has maintained his Cy Young-level dominance, but Casey Mize has battled a hamstring injury, and Jack Flaherty has struggled through a rough stretch. The silver lining? Help is on the horizon, with a key starting pitcher nearing the end of a lengthy rehab and ready to rejoin the rotation.

Reese Olson to Rejoin Tigers During Upcoming Guardians Series

According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch confirmed that Reese Olson has wrapped up his rehab from a finger injury and will rejoin the starting rotation during this weekend’s series against the Cleveland Guardians.

While McCosky noted Olson could pitch in Friday’s opener, the Tigers are eager to get him back on the mound. The right-hander was impressive early in the season, posting a 4-3 record with a 2.96 ERA before landing on the injured list on May 19 due to inflammation in his right ring finger. He also recorded a career-best 25.4% strikeout rate across 48.2 innings.

Detroit came into Wednesday with a comfortable 12-game lead over the Guardians in the AL Central, and Olson’s return adds to their already impressive pitching depth. The Tigers have managed their rotation well, even employing a six-man setup earlier this season to navigate injuries.

If Olson can pick up where he left off, the Tigers will be in a strong position to address other needs — like adding a right-handed bat or bullpen support — ahead of the trade deadline. His return could be a key piece in Detroit’s quest to return to the World Series for the first time since 2012.
