According to WNBA insider Melissa Triebwasser, the Wings are prioritizing the protection of their core group of three first-round draft picks over the next two years, choosing to focus on future assets rather than quick mid-season fixes despite their current 12th-place position and growing losses.
“NEWS: Sources confirm that the Wings were not involved in any trade deals late in the process and will not make additional moves before today’s 3:00 pm ET trade deadline,” Triebwasser posted on X. “The Wings value their three first-round picks over the next two years and are not willing to sacrifice those future assets.”
This decision follows their recent trade sending DiJonai Carrington to Minnesota in exchange for rising forward Diamond Miller, guard Karlie Samuelson, and a 2027 second-round pick. Carrington had been acquired before the season in a four-team trade aimed at bolstering Dallas’ defense. Last season’s Most Improved Player and All-Defensive First Team member, Carrington was averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists across 21 games this year.
Diamond Miller adds valuable three-point shooting, leading the league this season with a 53.8% mark from beyond the arc, while Samuelson provides scoring depth when healthy.
Still, the Wings appear committed to building around Paige Bueckers, their standout rookie, rather than risking immediate roster upgrades, making her the central figure heading into the final stretch of the season.
Wings to Rely Heavily on Paige Bueckers For Rest of the Season
Despite the team’s ongoing struggles, Paige Bueckers remains the Wings’ standout leader. She’s averaging 18.6 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.1 rebounds over 24 games this season, leading the team in scoring while continuing to deliver exceptional playmaking alongside veteran guard Arike Ogunbowale.
However, Bueckers can’t do it all by herself. With the Wings currently seven games out of a playoff spot, their postseason chances are slipping away, making timely scoring and veteran contributions crucial as the season winds down. Thursday’s decision to stand pat at the trade deadline may signal a larger rebuilding plan for Dallas — one focused on building around Bueckers with young talent, valuable draft picks, and salary cap flexibility to lay the groundwork for future success.
