Although the Atlanta Braves’ season hasn’t gone as expected, they are beginning to show signs of life and may even be a contender again next year.
The Braves, who have won nine of their previous eleven games, have witnessed offensive comebacks from important players like Matt Olson and Michael Harris II. To compete in a crowded National League East the next season, however, some roster adjustments could still be required.
Does that imply that the Braves are searching this summer for one more seasoned starting pitcher? Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggested on Wednesday that the Braves may make an offseason deal for three-time All-Star and St. Louis Cardinals starter Sonny Gray.
Given that Gray is entering the last guaranteed year of his deal and the Cardinals are starting a mini-rebuild, Rosenthal interpreted certain recent remarks made by the right-hander that suggested he would be open to a trade.
Right-hander Sonny Gray of the St. Louis Cardinals has so far refused to waive his no-trade clause. However, he may alter his mind this offseason,” Rosenthal added. In November, Gray will turn 36, and he still believes he can contribute. He stated that he would like to have another opportunity to win and to pitch in the postseason.
“Gray’s no-trade protection would enable him to efficiently select his next team if he lets the Cardinals shop him. The Atlanta Braves, who play even closer to Gray’s Nashville home than the Cardinals, are one club to keep an eye on.
Gray has struck out a remarkable 155 hitters in 140 innings while pitching to a 4.30 ERA in 25 appearances this season. The year before he inked a three-year, $75 million contract with the Cardinals, he placed second in the American League Cy Young voting in 2023.
In order to make a trade, the Braves would probably have to cover the majority, if not all, of Gray’s $35 million salary for the upcoming season. However, stating that he is amenable to the prospect of pitching in Atlanta would be the first step.
