The St. Louis Cardinals acquired third baseman Nolan Arenado in February 2021 by trading five players to the Colorado Rockies. Among the more well-known players Colorado acquired in the transaction was left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber. However, Gomber, like many of his predecessors, had trouble succeeding with Colorado. Did Gomber merely have trouble succeeding, or was it the improvement of Coors Field? In any case, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports that Gomber was formally released by the Rockies on Friday.

During his five seasons with the Rockies, Gomber never had an ERA below 4.75. Gomber never settled in with the team, despite the ball club’s patience with him. Gomber has a terrible 7.49 ERA in 12 appearances in 2025. It will be interesting to observe whether other teams take notice of Gomber at the age of thirty-one.
At one point, Gomber’s ceiling was thought to be quite high. Maybe a team will give the left-handed pitcher a shot. Ball teams in need of relief aid may consider moving him to the bullpen.
Whatever Gomber’s MLB future may bring, the Rockies are taking a different course. Life hasn’t been easy for the team since trading Arenado to the Cardinals. Despite being the subject of trade speculations for the past year, Arenado has nevertheless had a significant influence in St. Louis.

At the moment, the Cardinals are 64-65. St. Louis is just four games away from a National League Wild Card berth, despite being in fourth place in the National League Central.

It’s reasonable to say, however, that the Rockies won’t be playing any significant baseball in October of this year. The poorest record in the whole sport is Colorado’s 37-91 record. As they rebuild, they are looking for answers, but the sad truth is that the Rockies don’t appear to be very near to becoming a contender.
