This marks a heartbreaking end to what had been another outstanding season for Wheeler, who had been a key contributor to the NL East-leading Phillies. Prior to his injury, he posted a 2.71 ERA over 149.2 innings across 24 starts, translating to a 4.0 pitching WAR, according to Fangraphs.

On Instagram, Wheeler shared a heartfelt message, expressing gratitude to Phillies fans for their support and promising to return stronger next year.

“Thank you for all the support this season. It means the world to me and my family. As many of you know, I’ll be having surgery in the coming weeks, which means I’ll miss the rest of the 2025 season. It’s tough news, but I’m so grateful for all the love and well-wishes I’ve already received,” Wheeler wrote.

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler’s injury situation escalated quickly

Just over a week ago, the Phillies placed Zack Wheeler on the injured list due to a blood clot near his right shoulder. Since then, the situation has quickly worsened for the 35-year-old ace. Wheeler recently underwent a thrombolysis procedure to remove the clot, and now he’s facing an even more extensive surgery that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Wheeler had been experiencing shoulder discomfort since early August. Since late July, the Phillies’ star pitcher hadn’t been at his usual form. In five starts following the All-Star break, he posted a 4.23 ERA and allowed two or more runs in six consecutive outings—a stark contrast to just five such games in his first 18 starts.

Clearly, something was affecting Wheeler’s performance, and the Phillies are hopeful that the upcoming surgery will fully address the issue.
