All season long, the New York Mets have struggled with their rotation. Many of the weapons that propelled them to the Championship Series a year ago have not been stable or durable. David Peterson is beginning to falter, Kodai Senga is having a lot of trouble, and Sean Manaea has missed the most of the season thus far while not being as effective as the Mets had wanted when he has been on the mound.

The Mets will probably be responsible for a player’s deal that has been a huge flop thus far in the upcoming season.

Frankie Montas is expected to exercise the option

Prior to the 2025 season, New York Mets star Frankie Montas agreed to a one-year contract worth $17 million. Additionally, he will have a $17 million player option in 2026. The Mets are in trouble since he has been awful and just tore his UCL, which might keep him out of the lineup for the most of the 2026 campaign.

Before being moved to the bullpen, Montas made seven starts. This season, he has pitched 38.2 innings with an overall ERA of 6.28. The Mets, who often spend a lot of money in Major League Baseball, may have overspent this deal. He only made eight starts in 2022, pitched in one game in 2023, and had a 4.84 ERA the previous season.

The Mets took a risk on him as a possible reclamation project, which makes sense, but it appears more probable that he will be out of baseball rather being given another opportunity with someone else. Although it will be intriguing to watch how he heals from the UCL injury, Montas won’t be useful if he loses any more speed.

A.J. Minter, a reliever for New York who has only hurled 11 innings this season, is in a similar situation. Next season, he is scheduled to receive $11 million. Despite being injured for the whole season, he has recently shown himself to be a productive arm.
