Miami Marlins decided to part ways with Avisaíl García, their free agent acquisition, due to his underperformance and frequent injuries. Despite signing a $53 million, four-year deal in December 2021, García failed to meet expectations during his two full seasons with the team. His offensive output was lacking, and he spent considerable time on the injured list.

García’s recent struggles were evident as he struggled during a five-game stint with Triple-A Jacksonville, hitting only 2 for 19. Manager Skip Schumaker praised García’s character but acknowledged his extensive time on the injured list.

With $24,612,903 remaining on his contract, García’s departure seems inevitable. If he clears waivers, any team could sign him for a prorated share of the major league minimum.

In his first season with the Marlins, García played 98 games, batting .224 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs. His performance dipped further in the following season, where he managed just three home runs in 37 games. This season, he played in only 18 games before suffering another injury setback, primarily serving in a platoon role.

García’s struggles were compounded by jeers from Marlins fans during the opening homestand of the season. Despite his recent difficulties, García had notable achievements earlier in his career, including a career-high 29 home runs and 86 RBIs with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021, and an All-Star selection with the Chicago White Sox in 2017.

Schumaker acknowledged García’s contributions to the game but emphasized the need for the team to move forward.
