The Boston Red Sox have been searching for a long-term replacement at first base since Triston Casas went down, and one familiar name is back on their radar.
Fansided’s Jake Elman reports that Boston is emerging as a leading candidate to land New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso, who is set to hit free agency this winter.

“Elson was a strong fit for the Red Sox last offseason, and he still makes perfect sense now,” Elman wrote. “Casas’ future as Boston’s everyday first baseman was already in question before his knee injury, and now the need is urgent. If the Sox are serious about competing in 2026 instead of leaning on their prospect pool, Alonso is exactly the type of player Craig Breslow should target.”

Alonso has posted a .267/.344/.511/.854 slash line with 33 home runs this season—more than any current Red Sox hitter—providing the kind of steady power the club’s inconsistent lineup desperately needs.
Still, Elman notes Boston could be forced to choose between Alonso and Alex Bregman in free agency, with Bregman potentially being the more realistic option.

“The real question is whether the Sox want to commit to both Alonso and Bregman,” Elman added. “While it’s possible, it seems more likely they’ll go after one. In that case, Bregman has the edge, thanks to his strong relationship with Alex Cora and the high praise he’s received from teammates. Plus, there’s still a chance he considers staying in Boston.”
