The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced on Monday that they have added former Thompson High School quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa to their practice squad.

Tagovailoa, who played for Alabama in 2019 before transferring to Maryland, set the Big Ten’s career passing yards record over four seasons with the Terrapins. At Maryland, he completed 955 of 1,424 passes for 11,256 yards, 76 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions. Tagovailoa also matched the school’s single-season record for touchdown passes with 26, a record held by Hamilton’s coach, Scott Milanovich.

During his time at Thompson High School in Alabaster, Tagovailoa was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 7A Back of the Year for 2017 and 2018. He became the first player in Alabama high school history to have at least four games with over 400 passing yards, achieving a personal best of 507 yards in a 35-21 victory against Oak Mountain on September 14, 2018.

In his senior year, Tagovailoa threw for 3,728 yards and 35 touchdowns, leading the Warriors to the AHSAA Class 7A Championship Game, where they were defeated by Central-Phenix City 52-7. A shoulder injury sustained in the semifinal victory over Hoover prevented him from finishing the title game.

At Alabama, Tagovailoa was third on the depth chart behind his brother, Tua Tagovailoa, and Mac Jones in 2019, completing 9 of 12 passes for 100 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions in his appearances.

Planning to play another college season in 2024, Tagovailoa entered the NCAA transfer portal and requested a waiver for a sixth season of eligibility. His waiver was based on playing only four snaps in two of the five games in 2019, exceeding the redshirt limit. However, the NCAA denied his request, leading him to enter the draft, though he was not selected. He attended rookie minicamps with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.
