HUDE BOOST: New York Yankees adding All-Star first baseman to a huge contract agreement
The New York Yankees intended to have Anthony Rizzo as their primary first baseman this season, but with the 34-year-old suffering a forearm fracture, they need to adjust their plans. Rizzo is expected to be out for about two months, and although 25-year-old prospect Ben Rice can step in, the Yankees are looking for an additional backup.
Losing a key player to injury is always challenging, but the Yankees have some time to find a solution for first base, with the MLB trade deadline not until July 30. There are several options available, and some believe the Yankees might take a different approach to enhance their roster.
According to FanSided’s Robert Murray, the Yankees are among several teams considering signing former All-Star first baseman Garrett Cooper. The 33-year-old recently became a free agent after being released by the Boston Red Sox, where he struggled, hitting just .171 in 24 games.
However, Cooper had a much stronger start to the season with the Cubs, hitting .270 in his first 12 games. Despite his solid performance, the Cubs traded him to Boston to provide more playing time for Michael Busch and Mike Tauchman.
Besides playing first base, Cooper can also cover right field if necessary. Either way, the 6-foot-5 slugger could add a potentially powerful bat to the Yankees’ lineup during this critical time.
