Ohio State Broken Records come to an end
The Ohio State Buckeyes accomplished something on September 27, 1930 that remains unparalleled to this day and is unlikely to be repeated. In their inaugural September game at Ohio Stadium, they dominated Mount Union with a staggering 59-0 victory. While Ohio State has achieved similar scores in subsequent games, including significant wins in the Big Ten title match, the most remarkable feat of that day wasn’t just the nine touchdowns they scored.
The Buckeyes amassed an extraordinary 718 rushing yards using coach Sam Willaman’s innovative Pop Warner offense. No Ohio State team has come close to matching this record since, with the closest being 517 yards achieved twice. Despite advancements in passing strategies making such achievements increasingly rare, even the most formidable rushing-focused Ohio State teams in subsequent eras, including standout squads like the 1974 team featuring Archie Griffin, fell short of matching the 1930 record.
Looking more recently, Ohio State’s highest rushing total in a game was 215 yards in 2023, a stark contrast to the historic 718-yard mark. Even during their dominant periods, such as in 2016 against Rutgers with 410 rushing yards, or in 2013 against Illinois with 441 yards, the Buckeyes haven’t come close to replicating their 1930 performance.
Considering the evolution of football strategies and the emphasis on passing, it appears highly improbable that a modern Ohio State team will ever again achieve over 700 rushing yards in a game. While it’s not impossible, it would likely require a drastic shift in game tactics reminiscent of early football eras.
