On Sunday, June 23, 2024, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced that defenseman Ian Mitchell has signed a one-year, two-way contract. The deal carries a salary cap hit of $775,000 and extends through the 2024-25 season.

Mitchell, who has been utilized as a depth defenseman by the Bruins, played 13 games for Boston during the 2023-24 season, contributing two assists while earning a plus-six rating and accruing ten penalty minutes. Over the course of his career, Mitchell has appeared in 95 NHL games spanning parts of four seasons, tallying 4 goals, 14 assists, and 18 points, with a minus-15 rating. During the 2023-24 season, he primarily played with the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence, appearing in 42 games and recording six goals and 18 assists for a total of 24 points, along with a plus-ten rating.

Originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft (57th overall), the 25-year-old defenseman hails from St. Albert, Alberta. Mitchell spent three years playing collegiate hockey at the University of Denver before making his NHL debut. He was acquired by the Bruins along with Alec Regula on June 26, 2023, in a trade that sent Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to Chicago.
