The announcement of Hedman’s extension follows the departure of longtime captain Steven Stamkos, who signed with the Nashville Predators. Similar to Stamkos, Hedman has participated in all four of the Lightning’s Stanley Cup appearances over the past decade. He earned the Conn Smythe Trophy during the Lightning’s 2020 Stanley Cup championship run, accumulating 18 points in 23 playoff games that season. Additionally, Hedman scored the series-winning goal in the second round against the Boston Bruins.
Hedman’s Re-Signing is One of Many Recent Transactions
General Manager Julien BriseBois has had a busy few days. Besides extending Hedman’s contract and the unsuccessful attempts to re-sign Stamkos, there were two other significant moves. First, the Lightning traded defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to the Utah Hockey Club to free up cap space. Then, they acquired the rights to winger Jake Guentzel in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes, signing him to a contract extension before the free agency period began.
