Report: Hurricanes confirm another key man commitment
Gavin Nix, a four-star linebacker from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, appeared likely to remain in-state for his college football career. His top three choices were Miami and Florida State, with Oregon as the outlier. Considering Oregon’s status as a championship contender in the Big Ten, their presence on his list was expected. However, with Miami and FSU also in contention, it seemed clear that Nix preferred to stay in Florida. In the end, Nix confirmed this by committing to the Miami Hurricanes.

“They fit all the things I valued throughout my process,” Nix told On3’s Steve Wiltfong about his decision. “They’ve been super consistent for me. Their love for me never wavered. Throughout the whole thing, Miami was always right there with me and made me and my family feel like a family.”
Nix’s commitment is a significant win for Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff. According to 247Sports, he’s ranked as the No. 11 linebacker recruit in the 2025 class and is a top-100 recruit overall, positioned at No. 88.
Nix not only felt comfortable with the Hurricanes’ coaching staff and Cristobal’s vision but was also impressed by the atmosphere at Miami and the strong NFL-focused alumni base.
“What really shocked me, different than any other school I’ve been to, is that the football alumni are always there,” Nix explained. “When you visit Miami, you always see some type of NFL legend, and they’re real people you can approach, talk to, and learn from. Jon Beason, Jonathan Vilma, Rohan Marley, Calais Campbell, Edgerrin James—you can just go up and talk to them, and that really stuck out to me.”
Nix aims to follow in their footsteps, and his junior year performance suggests he has the talent to do so. Last season, he recorded 42 tackles (seven for loss), five quarterback hits, and one sack in eight games.
