Report: Twins another crucial superstar to League Deal

The Twins have signed outfielder Wynton Bernard to a minor league contract, as per MLB.com’s transactions tracker. Bernard was previously with the White Sox under a minor league deal but was released recently.

At 33 years old, Bernard played 41 games with Triple-A Charlotte before his release, posting a below-average walk rate of 3.2% but maintaining a low strikeout rate of 16.8%. His batting line of .306/.328/.446 resulted in a 97 wRC+ in this year’s International League environment. Additionally, he stole 11 bases in 12 attempts and played all three outfield positions.

Despite his solid performance, the rebuilding White Sox likely opted to allocate their minor league playing time to younger prospects who could contribute to the team’s future.

In contrast, the Twins are in a win-now mode, making Bernard a more fitting addition as veteran depth. However, breaking into the big league roster in Minnesota will be challenging. The Twins’ current outfield roster includes Byron Buxton, Max Kepler, Trevor Larnach, Matt Wallner, and Manuel Margot, with Willi Castro splitting time between the infield and outfield. Alex Kirilloff and Austin Martin, also versatile players, are currently on the injured list.

Given Buxton’s and Margot’s injury histories, Bernard might be needed at any time. His base-stealing ability could make him a valuable bench player for pinch-running or as a defensive replacement. Bernard’s major league experience includes 12 games with the Rockies in 2022, where he hit .286/.286/.310 and stole three bases in four attempts. If he joins the 40-man roster, he still has a couple of options left.
