The Dallas Cowboys did it again, with Dak Prescott facing the pressure of a season on the line and high Super Bowl expectations from both insiders and analysts. Prescott believed the 2023 team was different, and for good reason.

Prescott was a contender for NFL MVP, wrapping up one of his best regular seasons. The Cowboys were heavy favorites in their wildcard matchup against the Green Bay Packers, who had a rookie starting quarterback and the league’s youngest roster.

Prescott finished the 2023 regular season ranked top five in key QB stats, with 4,516 yards (3rd), 36 touchdowns (1st), 9 interceptions, and a 72.5 QB rating (2nd). Despite skepticism over Jerry Jones firing offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, head coach Mike McCarthy’s play calling led to an elite offensive performance. Prescott and CeeDee Lamb became one of the top QB/WR duos in the league.

The Cowboys’ explosive offense, averaging 389 yards and 30 points per game with 77 touchdowns, was complemented by a defense ranked 5th in the NFL. However, another early playoff exit left the Cowboys with many offseason questions.

A major decision looms regarding Prescott. Jerry Jones chose not to extend his contract, so Prescott will likely play out his final year in 2024, making his future uncertain. The franchise also faces decisions on Cooper Rush and Trey Lance. Lance’s increased cap hit adds uncertainty to Rush’s future, with Lance expected to take over as the backup QB.

Jon Machota of The Athletic predicts the Cowboys will keep Prescott and Lance while releasing Rush. Machota emphasized that Dallas is unlikely to retain three quarterbacks, and Lance is favored to secure the backup role unless he performs poorly in camp and preseason.

There is also a possibility that Dallas could trade Rush instead of releasing him. ESPN’s Todd Archer reported interest from the Las Vegas Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals. Even a late-round draft pick would be preferable to releasing Rush for nothing.

In conclusion, it’s unlikely that Cooper Rush will be on the Cowboys’ 2024 roster.
