Mauricio, long viewed as a promising talent within the organization, was expected to help stabilize the infield.
However, the situation quickly became more complicated when Mauricio himself suffered an injury shortly after his promotion. That setback forced the Mets to dip even further into their system, leading to the addition of utility player Vidal Bruján, who was brought up from Triple-A to provide additional flexibility and coverage across multiple positions. These moves reflected just how stretched the roster had become, with the team continuously adjusting in response to unexpected losses.
While position-player shuffling has drawn attention, the pitching side of the organization has also been in flux. Like many MLB clubs dealing with injuries and performance volatility, the Mets have been exploring every possible option to strengthen their bullpen and rotation depth. One such player was veteran right-hander Nick Burdi, a name familiar across several organizations in recent years. Burdi’s career has included stops with multiple teams, including the Boston Red Sox, where he made a brief but effective appearance last season. During that stint, he pitched in a small number of games but managed to show flashes of his ability, recording five strikeouts while not allowing an earned run in limited innings.
Before that, Burdi also spent time with the New York Yankees, appearing in a dozen games during the 2024 season. Across his career, he has additionally been part of organizations such as the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates, making him a well-traveled pitcher with experience in different bullpen environments.
Given his background and flashes of effectiveness, the Mets signed Burdi to a minor-league contract during the offseason. At the time, the move was viewed as a low-risk, potentially high-reward addition. The logic was straightforward: a veteran arm with prior major-league experience could provide valuable depth, and if he performed well in spring training, he might even compete for a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.
However, Burdi’s path with the organization never fully materialized in the way both sides might have hoped. He entered spring training with an opportunity to prove himself, but his performances during camp did not meet the standard required to secure a major-league roster spot. In particular, his outings in the Grapefruit League were uneven, and the team ultimately decided to reassess his role.
According to reporting from CBS Sports, Burdi allowed two runs over two innings in his spring appearances, which contributed to the decision to remove him from major-league consideration. Following that, he was reassigned to minor-league camp, where he was expected to begin the season at Triple-A Syracuse and continue building toward a potential call-up if needed.
For a brief period, that plan appeared to still be in motion. Burdi did pitch for Syracuse this season and put together respectable numbers, posting a 2.08 ERA across five appearances. While those results suggested he still had the ability to contribute effectively at a professional level, they were ultimately not enough to alter the broader trajectory of his career.
On Tuesday, however, an unexpected development shifted that narrative entirely. According to official transaction records, Burdi abruptly announced his retirement from professional baseball. The decision effectively ends his playing career and removes him from consideration as an option for the Mets’ pitching depth moving forward.
The retirement comes after a career that included both promise and significant adversity. Burdi was once a highly regarded pitching prospect and was drafted in the second round, entering professional baseball with expectations of becoming a long-term bullpen contributor at the major-league level. Over time, however, his journey was repeatedly interrupted by major injuries, including thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and multiple Tommy John procedures.
Those medical setbacks significantly altered his trajectory, forcing him to spend extended periods recovering and attempting to rebuild his pitching mechanics and velocity. Despite those challenges, he continued to pursue opportunities across different organizations, demonstrating persistence in returning to the mound whenever possible.
For the Mets, Burdi’s retirement represents a small but notable loss in terms of organizational pitching depth. While he was not part of the major-league roster at the time of his departure, he was considered one of several experienced arms who could potentially be called upon later in the season if injuries or performance issues created openings.
Now, that option is no longer available.
