Rivals national recruiting analyst John Garcia Jr. and national rankings director Adam Friedman both affirmed as fact when addressing the question “Fact or Fiction: Miami commit Hylton Stubbs is nearing five-star status.”

Stubbs is ranked 27th overall, seventh in Florida, and third among safeties in the 2025 Rivals class rankings. He is the highest-ranked player in Miami’s 2025 class according to Rivals. Friedman and Garcia provided detailed insights into why Stubbs is approaching five-star status.

Friedman highlighted Stubbs’ “coverage skills in the secondary, wingspan, leaping abilities, and physical style,” expressing confidence in his potential to excel at the next level. Standing at 6’2″ and 190 pounds, Stubbs possesses the ideal size for a collegiate safety.

Four-star safety Drake Stubbs looks towards the sideline after making a big hit in the second quarter.

Garcia noted that Stubbs has significantly improved his stock over the past year, “flashing with his range and ball skills in coverage while showing a willingness to work down the alley or into the box to make an impact closer to the line of scrimmage.”

Although projected as a safety, Garcia was impressed with “how comfortable Stubbs is in space, with man coverage skills at or near the top compared to any non-cornerback projections in the cycle.” Miami is developing a versatile secondary, especially among its safeties.

Stubbs leads an outstanding 2025 Miami secondary class, which also includes commitments from four-star safety Amari Wallace, cornerback Chris Ewald, and three-star cornerback Timothy Merritt. Wallace is listed by some recruiting outlets as a cornerback. Stubbs and Wallace will offer Miami considerable flexibility in their future secondary.

The 2025 Miami class is currently ranked 10th in the Rivals rankings. Fifteen of Miami’s 18 commits for 2025 are rated four stars by Rivals. Miami is on track to sign a top 10 class for the third consecutive year and the top-ranked class in the ACC for the third straight cycle.
