The Michigan football team has dominated the Big Ten, winning the conference title and making the College Football Playoff for three consecutive years. They are the reigning national champions, having built substantial momentum over this period. However, expectations outside of Ann Arbor for the upcoming season are not as high.

Michigan has experienced significant coaching changes, losing a considerable part of their staff, including head coach Jim Harbaugh, who has moved to the Los Angeles Chargers. Consequently, the Wolverines will have new head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator.

Additionally, the team has been impacted by numerous NFL departures. Michigan’s 2023 roster was exceptionally talented, contributing to their status as the top college football team. No school had more players drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft than Michigan. Replacing this talent will be challenging, but it’s important to remember the skilled players who are returning.

The Wolverines will look different this year, and some key losses will be tough to overcome. Nevertheless, they still have some highly talented players from last year’s national championship team, particularly on defense. Some of the best players in college football will be wearing Maize and Blue next season. Here are Michigan’s three best returners:

1. Will Johnson, CB

Michigan defensive back Will Johnson celebrates after intercepting a pass from Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord during the first half at Michigan Stadium

Will Johnson is not only the top player on the Michigan football team but also arguably the best player in all of college football. The standout cornerback is projected to be a top-five pick in the NFL Draft next spring and is set for a stellar season with the Wolverines. In EA Sports College Football 2025, Johnson is the highest-rated player in the game. While it’s just a video game, these ratings reflect his real-life performance. Johnson is undoubtedly the best returning player for the Wolverines.

2. Mason Graham, DL

Next, we have defensive lineman Mason Graham. Like Will Johnson, Graham is one of the best players in college football. Last season, he recorded 35 total tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble, consistently making big plays. With another offseason of development, Graham is expected to perform even better this season. He is projected to be a top-10 pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

3. Colston Loveland, TE

Finally, we have tight end Colston Loveland, who is arguably the top tight end in college football now that Brock Bowers has entered the NFL. Last season, Loveland caught 45 passes for 649 yards and four touchdowns. His receiving abilities are exceptional, but at Michigan, tight ends are also vital due to their consistent rushing attack. Loveland is also outstanding in the running game, making him a well-rounded and refined player. He is likely to be a first-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

Michigan football did lose a lot from last year, but they still have some of the most talented players in the country on their roster. These are just the top three, but there are many others as well. These skilled returning players can propel the Wolverines far in 2024.
