Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner has been at the center of trade rumors, with one proposal suggesting he could be traded to the New York Islanders. Marner is entering the final year of his six-year, $65.41 million contract, making him a prime candidate for trade speculation. A user on PuckPedia’s new tool, PuckGM, suggested a blockbuster trade that would send Marner to the Islanders.

Maple Leafs get:

  • Brock Nelson
  • Ryan Pulock
  • Islanders get:
  • Mitch Marner
  • Timothy Liljegren
  • 2026 third-round pick.
  • The proposed trade would be a significant shake-up for both teams. Toronto would send Mitch Marner, former first-round pick defenseman Timothy Liljegren, and a third-round pick to the New York Islanders in exchange for Brock Nelson and Ryan Pulock. While Nelson isn’t quite on Marner’s level, Pulock would be an upgrade over Liljegren, potentially boosting Toronto’s defense. Nelson is in the final year of his six-year, $36 million contract, while Pulock is entering the third year of a $49.2 million deal.

This trade makes sense for both sides: Toronto would relieve themselves of Marner’s contract, find a capable replacement in Nelson, and strengthen their defense. On the other hand, the Islanders would trade from their defensive depth to acquire a stronger forward in Marner, while Liljegren could help fill the gap left by Pulock.

  • Nelson Mentioned as Trade Candidate

  • NHL insider Arthur Staple of The Athletic highlighted Brock Nelson as a potential trade candidate in his August 1 mailbag column. With Nelson entering the final year of his contract, Staple suggests that his future with the Islanders could hinge on the team’s performance this season.

Staple wrote that if the Islanders are securely in a playoff spot by the trade deadline, General Manager Lou Lamoriello is likely to bolster the roster. However, if the team is out of playoff contention, Nelson could be at the top of the list of players likely to be traded for a significant return.

Staple acknowledged Nelson’s consistency over the past five years, expressing some hesitation about trading him, while noting that much depends on the Islanders’ season. He also mentioned that Lamoriello could choose to extend Nelson before the season begins.

Nelson, who was drafted 30th overall by the Islanders in the 2012 NHL draft, has played in 840 NHL games, tallying 275 goals and 256 assists for a total of 531 points.

  • Marner Wants to Remain With The Maple Leafs

  • Despite the trade rumors, Mitch Marner has been vocal about his desire to stay with his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs. After Toronto’s first-round exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs, Marner made it clear during a May 6 media session that he wants to remain with the team long-term.

“That’d be a goal. I’ve expressed my love for this place, this city. Obviously, I’ve grown up here. We’ll start thinking about that now and trying to figure something out… It means the world to me,” Marner said.

Marner has played in 576 NHL games, where he has recorded 194 goals and 445 assists, totaling 639 points.
