DEAL DONE: Carolina Hurricanes confirm new Sign deal
The NHL offseason is currently at one of its quieter phases. The major free agency moves are done, and most teams have almost finalized their lineups for October. However, some teams are still working to refine their rosters, including by signing prominent restricted free agents (RFAs). The Carolina Hurricanes find themselves in this situation, having already secured their other key RFAs like Martin Necas and Jack Drury. Now, all eyes are on their last remaining RFA. This edition of NHL Rumours provides updates on Seth Jarvis’s potential signing with Carolina.

Carolina Hurricanes Continue to Push to Sign Seth Jarvis
Rumor: Sportsnet’s Luke Fox and Rory Boylen have discussed the latest developments regarding the Hurricanes’ efforts to sign Seth Jarvis.
The Carolina Hurricanes had a number of free agents to address this summer, with Seth Jarvis being one of the most notable restricted free agents on the list. With other free agents taken care of and new players joining the team, all attention is now on Jarvis. According to Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal, Jarvis might be looking at an eight-year deal with an average annual value of $8.35 million. Additionally, Adam Gold from the Canes Corner podcast reported that both sides are aiming for a maximum eight-year extension, with the financial details potentially being finalized soon.
Jarvis is the Present and the Future for Carolina
Coming off his entry-level contract, Seth Jarvis had an outstanding season with the Hurricanes, surpassing his previous career highs in goals, assists, and points (33 goals, 34 assists, 67 points). Achieving 30 goals at just 22 years old is remarkable, especially considering he played much of the season with a torn labrum and rotator cuff.
Among players drafted in the 2020 NHL Draft, Jarvis ranks fourth in points despite playing fewer games than those above him. Acquiring him 13th overall that year, especially by taking on Patrick Marleau’s contract, has proven to be a wise move. Even with the departures of Jake Guentzel and Teuvo Teravainen, Jarvis remains a top forward for the Hurricanes and becomes even more critical without them.
Jarvis not only contributes offensively and plays in all situations but also embodies Rod Brind’Amour’s style of play. His relentless energy, tenacious forechecking, and strong defensive responsibility, combined with his high skill level, make him nearly indispensable. His energetic personality also adds vibrancy to Carolina’s locker room. In the playoffs, Jarvis is just as crucial, showing a knack for clutch performances. With only three NHL seasons under his belt, his potential remains incredibly high.
What Gives with this Potential Deal?
This brings us to the current NHL Rumours. The question surrounding Seth Jarvis’s contract appears to be more about “when” and “what it will look like” rather than “if” a deal will happen. All signs suggest that both parties are eager to finalize an agreement. The likelihood of an offer sheet seems minimal, as Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky has indicated they would be able to match any potential offers. Based on comparable contracts, Jarvis might be looking at a deal slightly above the 8×8 range.
The key issue for Carolina is whether to commit to an eight-year contract or opt for a shorter bridge deal, reassessing his performance in a few years. Given how well Jarvis fits into the Hurricanes’ lineup as a top-line forward, it seems unlikely they would want to risk losing him. High-caliber players like Jarvis are rare, and keeping him, especially at his age, seems to be in the best interest of both the team and the player. A long-term commitment appears to be the best path forward, but only time will reveal the final details of the deal.
