Brewers in agreement with Woodruff on 2-year deal

MILWAUKEE – Pitcher Brandon Woodruff has agreed to a two-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, as reported by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.

Woodruff became a free agent after the Brewers did not extend him a contract in November, following his recovery from shoulder surgery. Despite earning $10.8 million in 2023, he was not offered a contract, meaning he would have been under team control for one more season. However, due to his surgery to repair his throwing shoulder’s anterior capsule, the Brewers anticipate Woodruff’s absence for most, if not all, of the 2024 season.

During the 2023 season, Woodruff, a two-time All-Star right-handed pitcher, missed four months due to a subscapular strain but displayed excellent performance when healthy, recording a 5-1 record with a 2.28 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 67 innings.

Woodruff’s shoulder issues resurfaced on the eve of the NL Wild Card Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, ruling him out of the postseason. He subsequently underwent surgery to address the anterior capsule tear in his throwing shoulder.

Over his seven seasons with the Brewers, Woodruff has amassed a record of 46-26 with a 3.10 ERA, earning two All-Star Game selections. He holds the franchise record for the lowest combined hits and walks per innings pitched (1.0455) among pitchers with at least 600 innings pitched for the Brewers.
