DONE DEAL: Hurricanes lands two latest 5-star commitments
The Miami Hurricanes made significant strides in recruiting over the weekend, securing verbal commitments from two promising players. The momentum began on Friday when three-star defensive lineman Mykah Newton, who was previously committed to NC State, decided to join Miami. The excitement continued on Saturday with the addition of four-star safety Bryce Fitzgerald from Miami Columbus.
Newton, standing at 6-2 and weighing 255 pounds, enters his senior year at Newberry High School in northern Florida with an impressive 27 career sacks and 45 tackles for loss. Last season, as a junior, he led Newberry with 13 sacks, recorded 26 tackles for loss, forced three fumbles, and accumulated 62 tackles. According to 247Sports, Newton demonstrates excellent initial quickness and the ability to win with both speed and power. He is versatile, with experience in both two- and three-point stances, and is expected to be a valuable multi-year contributor at the Power Four level.
Meanwhile, Fitzgerald is ranked as the No. 12 safety in his class, the No. 21 prospect in Florida, and the No. 130 prospect nationally according to the 247Sports composite ranking. After transferring to Columbus from Miami Belen Jesuit, he had an outstanding junior season, recording 10 interceptions—five of which came during the playoffs—helping the Explorers win their second straight state title. Fitzgerald is also a key player on Columbus’ three-time state champion basketball team and plays wide receiver. He believes that his experience on both offense and defense gives him an edge in understanding the intricacies of the game, particularly in the defensive back-receiver dynamic.
Where Miami Hurricanes’ recruiting class stands
With the commitments of Mykah Newton and Bryce Fitzgerald, the Miami Hurricanes now have 22 recruits in their 2025 recruiting class. This class is ranked No. 5 nationally by Rivals, No. 9 by 247Sports, and No. 10 by On3. Notably, eight of these commitments have occurred in the last two months, including four-star prospects like offensive lineman Seuseu Alofaituli from Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, linebacker Gavin Nix from Bradenton IMG Academy, athlete Hylton Stubbs from Jacksonville Mandarin, and cornerback Jaboree Antoine from Westgate High in New Iberia, Louisiana. Other recent additions include three-star wide receiver Daylyn Upshaw from Central High in Phenix City, Alabama, three-star defensive lineman Donta Simpson from Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, and the latest pledges from Newton and Fitzgerald.
Additionally, five of these recruits hail from the Miami-Dade and Broward areas: Miami Central’s four-star wide receiver Amari Wallace, three-star linebacker Ezekial Marcelin, Chaminade-Madonna’s Simpson and four-star cornerback Chris Ewald, along with Columbus’ Fitzgerald.
