BREAK: Buckeyes Coach in Trouble After Michigan’s Resounding Win
The pressure on Ryan Day going into the 2024 college football season is immense. Throughout his tenure as Ohio State’s head coach, Day has only lost three conference games. The issue, however, is that all three defeats came at the hands of Michigan football, with two of them being by double digits.
Last season, Ohio State lost by six points, despite Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh not being on the sidelines. However, the Buckeyes never led in the game and have failed to hold a lead against Michigan in the last 86 minutes of play.
Ohio State fans can blame Connor Stalions all they want, but the reality is that Michigan football has dominated the rivalry over the past three years because they have been the better and more physical team.
It’s beat Michigan football or bust for Ryan Day
Beanie Wells, a former Ohio State running back who knows all about beating Michigan with physicality, emphasized the importance of the 2024 Buckeyes beating Michigan if Ryan Day wants to remain Ohio State’s head coach.
Wells pointed out that it’s not just about losing to Michigan but how the Buckeyes have been dominated in the past three games, with Michigan winning by an average margin of 14 points.
“When you look at the fact that they’ve lost three years in a row — not just losing those games,” Wells said. “It’s the way they lost. Michigan out-physicaled Ohio State. For years, Ohio State prided itself on being a physical, dominant team. But now, when they get into a dogfight in a phone booth, they’re not coming out on top. We didn’t see that toughness from this Ryan Day team, so they definitely need to improve.”
Ohio State fans are confident that the Buckeyes will crush Michigan, frequently mentioning a supposed “drop off” in Michigan’s performance. However, they better hope they’re right, because if Michigan comes into Columbus and wins again, Wells is likely correct that Ohio State will be searching for a new head coach.
