JUST IN: Penguins Trade Away Franchise Defence Cornerstone
Kris Letang has been a key figure on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ blue line since his NHL debut in the 2006-07 season, following his selection as the No. 62 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. However, recent speculation has resurfaced about Letang’s potential departure amid a challenging stretch of results for the Penguins. Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review referenced colleague Mark Madden, who mentioned on the Madden Monday podcast that there had been discussions between the Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens regarding a possible trade at Letang’s request. “I heard there were talks about trying to get Letang to Montreal at his request, but nothing materialized,” Madden stated. “So, the future is uncertain.”
Letang’s ties to Montreal are well-known. During his contract negotiations two years ago, rumors circulated about a possible move to the Canadiens, a team that could greatly benefit from his experience and leadership as they enter the 2025 season in the midst of a rebuild. As a native of Montreal, the idea of Letang returning home to strengthen the Canadiens’ defense is plausible. His presence would not only solidify their blue line but also provide valuable mentorship to young talents like Kaiden Guhle, Arber Xhekaj, David Reinbacher, and Lane Hutson.
Letang signed a six-year, $36.6 million contract extension in 2022, seemingly setting the stage for him to finish his career in Pittsburgh. It’s also important to note that his current contract includes a full no-movement clause, giving Letang control over his future, even if the Penguins were to find a trade partner.
