DEPATURE: Seahawks Part Ways With Eminent CB

While numerous clubs in the National Football League disclosed early rounds of roster cuts on their path to their respective first 53-man rosters, the Seattle Seahawks (as usual) have kept things close to the vest.

With outside linebacker Trevis Gipson on his way to Seattle from the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Seahawks needed to release someone from their current 90-man roster. Willie Roberts, a former Louisiana Tech cornerback, has been released yet again.

This marks the fourth transaction involving Willie Roberts this month. Originally a rookie minicamp invite, Roberts was signed to the roster in early August after the team waived defensive tackle Matt Gotel. He was released when the Seahawks added tight ends Michael Ezeike and Devon Garrison late last week but was re-signed following the trade of Darrell Taylor, which created an open roster spot. Given the frequency of these moves, Roberts was likely always a candidate to be the first to go.

Looking ahead, the Seahawks must reduce their active roster by 38 players before Tuesday’s deadline. The additional cut is necessary because Max Pircher is an extra player via the International Pathway Program, bringing the total to 38 instead of the usual 37. Uchenna Nwosu is a strong candidate for injured reserve with a return designation, and thanks to this year’s updated rules, he can be placed on IR without first occupying a spot on the initial 53-man roster. Another situation to monitor is that of cornerback Artie Burns, who was carted off with a foot injury during the Cleveland Browns game, making him a potential candidate for IR as well.
