The St. Louis Blues have made a significant move by signing defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway to two-year contracts after the Edmonton Oilers declined to match the offer sheets the players signed on August 13. As a result, the Blues will send their 2025 second-round draft pick to Edmonton as compensation for Broberg and their 2025 third-round pick for Holloway.

Additionally, in a separate deal, the Blues are trading their 2028 third-round pick and unsigned 2023 fifth-round draft pick Paul Fischer to the Oilers in exchange for future considerations. These moves reflect St. Louis’s efforts to strengthen their roster by acquiring promising young talent from Edmonton.

Philip Broberg, 23, is a promising young defenseman originally selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round, No. 8 overall, of the 2019 NHL Draft. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 212 pounds, Broberg is known for his size, mobility, and offensive potential from the blue line.

Last season, Broberg split his time between the NHL and AHL, playing 12 regular-season games for the Oilers and 49 for the Bakersfield Condors, where he tallied 40 points (five goals, 35 assists). His postseason performance with the Oilers was notable as well, contributing three points (two goals, one assist) in 10 games and helping the team reach the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

In his NHL career, Broberg has appeared in 81 regular-season games, recording 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) and 10 penalty minutes. Internationally, he has represented Sweden on multiple occasions, including winning a bronze medal at the 2020 World Junior Championships.

Broberg’s addition to the St. Louis Blues brings a blend of youth, size, and international experience to their defensive corps, making him a key asset for the team moving forward.

Dylan Holloway, 22, is a talented forward who was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round, No. 14 overall, of the 2020 NHL Draft. At 6-foot-1 and 206 pounds, Holloway combines size, speed, and scoring ability, making him a promising young player in the league.

In the 2023-24 season, Holloway played 38 regular-season games for the Oilers and 18 for the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL, where he accumulated 25 points (16 goals, nine assists) and 41 penalty minutes. He also played in all 25 postseason games for the Oilers, contributing seven points (five goals, two assists) and eight penalty minutes, helping Edmonton reach the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

Could Dylan Holloway emerge into an impact player for the Oilers in 2024-25?

Over his NHL career, Holloway has appeared in 89 regular-season games, tallying 18 points (nine goals, nine assists) and 56 penalty minutes. Before turning pro, Holloway had a standout collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin, where he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the top collegiate player, in 2021. In the same year, he also won a silver medal with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships.

Holloway’s addition to the St. Louis Blues provides the team with a young forward who has already gained valuable experience in high-pressure situations, including deep playoff runs. His combination of physicality and offensive potential makes him a valuable asset as the Blues look to bolster their forward depth.
