It’s rare for a school to secure a prospect with the potential to become a true generational athlete, but that’s exactly what Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program accomplished when 2025 standout  committed to the Longhorns on Saturday night, according to a tweet from Hayes Fawcett of On3.

Ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, he is listed by some outlets as a safety and by others as a linebacker, demonstrating his versatility and ability to excel across different positions. Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 205 lbs., Williams has the potential to play all over the field. 247Sports analyst Hunter Standish described him as “a modern defensive chess piece who can move all around the defense while remaining effective against a variety of offensive schemes and play styles.” Given his size, skillset, and athletic profile, it’s fitting that Williams, who has said he models his game after Baltimore Ravens All-Pro Kyle Hamilton, would draw such a comparison at just 17 years old.

But Jonah Williams isn’t just a potential game-changing defensive player. During his junior season, he earned the title of Texas District 9-5A D-I Defensive Player of the Year, but he also recorded 22 offensive touches, accumulating over 600 yards and 10 touchdowns. And as if that weren’t enough, he’s also one of the top baseball recruits in the nation.

Steve Sarkisian building top-tier 2025 recruiting class for Texas Longhorns

Jonah Williams is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the Texas Longhorns’ 2025 recruiting class, but he isn’t the only addition worth celebrating. Currently, the Longhorns boast the 7th-ranked recruiting class for 2025, and before Williams’ commitment, wide receiver Kaliq Lockett was Steve Sarkisian’s most prized recruit. Lockett, the No. 2 wide receiver and No. 12 overall recruit in the class, committed to the Longhorns earlier this month, joining a class that already included seven top-200 players.

For Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns, these major recruiting victories are more crucial than ever. Ranked ahead of the Longhorns in the 2025 recruiting class rankings are the Ohio State Buckeyes, who have been on a prolonged recruiting hot streak, along with five SEC programs.

The Longhorns struggled to consistently contend in the Big 12 over the past decade, so stepping up to the SEC will be a significant challenge. However, everything Steve Sarkisian has done since arriving in Austin has positioned the Longhorns to remain at the top of the sport consistently.
