SHOCKING NEWS, JUST IN: WNBA player Dijonai Carrington with shocking George Floyd murder controversy losing to Caitlin Clark and indiana Fever
Connecticut Sun star DiJonai Carrington has strongly condemned an internet troll’s ‘sick’ meme involving George Floyd after expressing her frustration with Indiana Fever fans following Wednesday’s loss to Caitlin Clark and her team.
“Imagine thinking George Floyd’s murder is a joke,” Carrington wrote on X after the Sun’s 84-80 defeat in Indianapolis. “All because of a basketball game. This is so sick.”
The altered image portrays the infamous 2020 murder of Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who has since been convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison. In the meme, Caitlin Clark’s smiling face is superimposed over Chauvin’s, while Carrington’s headshot is placed over Floyd’s.
The inflammatory meme, created by a paying X subscriber, was posted in response to Carrington’s criticism of Fever fans: “The Indiana Fever have the nastiest fans in the W. Ew.”
Whether justified or not, the shocking meme might have reinforced Carrington’s negative view of Fever fans in the eyes of others.
“Average Indy fan behavior,” one follower commented in response to the meme. “Just like she said.”
Another chimed in: “Just say you hate Black women and move on.”
The murder of George Floyd in 2020 remains a deeply sensitive issue, especially after the Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined that he died of “cardiopulmonary arrest” caused by “law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression.”
In 2023, some social media users circulated a single page of the medical examiner’s report, suggesting that Floyd actually died from a drug overdose. Although fentanyl and methamphetamine were found in his system, expert witnesses at Derek Chauvin’s 2021 trial testified that drugs were not the cause of his death.
The offensive meme came after a tough loss for Carrington and the Connecticut Sun, a second-place team that had entered the night with a 3-0 record against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever this season.
However, Wednesday night told a different story, as Clark set a new WNBA rookie record for 3-pointers, surpassing Rhyne Howard’s 85 from 2022. Clark finished the game with 19 points and five assists, while Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 23 points.
Carrington had a strong performance, leading her team with 19 points and recording six steals, but she struggled from beyond the arc, making only 1 of 5 attempts. She also faced foul trouble in the fourth quarter.
At one point, Carrington was seen silencing the crowd after hitting her only 3-pointer of the night, but Clark quickly reignited the arena by sinking a 3-pointer on the very next possession.
Indiana (15-16) will move on to face Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on Saturday night, while Connecticut (22-8) heads to Washington for a Sunday matinee against the Mystics.
