INJURY: Eagles’ Veteran Defensive Back Will Be Out For Multi-Weeks
Eagles’ defenceman made the Eagles’ 53-man roster despite trade interest from other teams. However, the veteran defensive back won’t be available at the start of the season due to a lower leg injury sustained during practice. The injury involves a tendon, and while surgery isn’t required, he’s expected to be out for six to eight weeks.
The 31-year-old was on the roster bubble throughout the offseason, during which he transitioned from cornerback to safety. There was trade interest, particularly from the Titans, but Bradberry ultimately secured a roster spot. Philadelphia’s depth in the secondary will now be tested with his absence.
Bradberry, who suggested the position change after eight seasons as a cornerback, remained a full-time starter in his first two years with the Eagles. The team prioritized upgrading the secondary in the offseason, drafting Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in the first two rounds, both of whom are expected to play significant roles. Darius Slay continues as a veteran cornerback.
The Eagles’ safety depth chart includes C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, and Avonte Maddox, the latter of whom also moved to safety. With Bradberry sidelined, the Eagles will need to decide whether to place him on injured reserve (IR), which would sideline him for at least four games. The team already plans to use two IR activations on tight end Albert Okwuegbunam and rookie receiver Ainias Smith. Additionally, Brown was placed on the reserve/PUP list, ruling him out for the first four games. Bradberry’s situation adds another layer of complexity to the Eagles’ roster management.
