The New York Yankees, like other MLB teams, had the opportunity to expand their roster as September began. Many anticipated that the Yankees would call up top prospect to give the young outfielder more experience at the major league level.

However, Dominguez, who is 21 years old, was not included in the Yankees’ roster expansion. Manager Aaron Boone provided an explanation on Sunday.

“When he comes up here, you’re going to want to play him every day. So, he’ll continue to remain in that conversation. I feel like over the last couple of weeks, he’s starting to play well, coming back from the oblique injury. It’s a tough call right now, but that doesn’t mean things won’t change in a couple of days, a week, two weeks — whatever it is,” Boone told reporters, via The Athletic. “But it’s important for him to continue to play right now.”

This decision is notable given the Yankees’ recent struggles. Despite holding a solid 79-58 record and being in first place, New York has gone 6-8 in its past 14 games and has lost four of its last five, including a 14-7 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Why New York Yankees did not call up Jasson Dominguez

As Boone explained to reporters, Jasson Dominguez’s earlier oblique injury this season played a significant role in the Yankees’ decision-making process regarding his call-up. The injury undoubtedly factored into their cautious approach.

The 20-year-old Dominican Republic native made his MLB debut with the Yankees in September of last season, appearing in one game for the team earlier this year.

Playing time is certainly a challenge in the Bronx, as the Yankees already have Alex Verdugo, Aaron Judge, and Juan Soto as their starting outfielders, with Giancarlo Stanton serving as the primary designated hitter.

Despite these challenges, Dominguez has been performing well in the minors this season. Across three stops, he’s hitting .313 with an impressive .870 OPS, showing that he continues to develop and could be a valuable asset when the timing is right for the Yankees.
