Two former Detroit Tigers utility players, Kody Clemens and Nick Maton, have made their way back to Major League Baseball after being called up this weekend. Clemens was recalled by the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, while Maton had his contract selected by the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. These two were traded for each other 20 months ago, with Clemens and closer Gregory Soto going to the Phillies in exchange for Maton, outfielder Matt Vierling, and catcher Donny Sands.

Detroit Tigers' Nick Maton is slumping. Badly.

Maton, 27, began the 2023 season as the Tigers’ starting third baseman but struggled offensively and defensively, leading to his demotion to Triple-A Toledo in late June. Despite a return to the Tigers later in the season, he couldn’t secure a regular roster spot. He was placed on waivers before spring training and later traded to the Orioles for cash. After not making the Orioles’ Opening Day roster, Maton cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk, where he performed well enough to earn a brief promotion earlier this season.

Clemens, 28, was drafted by the Tigers in the third round of the 2018 draft and made his MLB debut in 2022. Although he struggled at the plate, hitting just .145 in 127 plate appearances, he showed some power with five home runs and even pitched in relief during blowout games. Over the past two seasons, Clemens has appeared in 72 games for the Phillies, alternating between the major league team and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Both players are now looking to make an impact as they aim to reestablish themselves in the majors.
