“Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, August 31, that the team has signed forward Tyler Johnson to a Professional Tryout Agreement (PTO),” the Bruins stated.
Johnson, 34, has spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks after being traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he played for nine years and won the Stanley Cup in consecutive seasons in 2020 and 2021.
Last season, the Spokane, Washington native played 67 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, tallying 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists), 26 penalty minutes, and a minus-35 rating.
With the Boston Bruins aiming to stay competitive in a tough Atlantic Division, bringing in a player like Tyler Johnson is a smart move for depth. If Johnson earns a contract out of training camp, he’s likely to play a bottom-six role and could contribute in 60 or more games during the 2024-25 season.
