BREAKING: Seahawks Strike Aggressive Trade With Vikings for Star QB

Geno Smith has yet to play a game under new head coach Mike Macdonald, but speculation is already brewing that the Seattle Seahawks could target a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. One name being floated is Texas Longhorns star quarterback Quinn Ewers. While there is debate about whether Ewers would be a significant upgrade over Smith, another quarterback prospect, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, might present a stronger case.

Sports Illustrated’s Gilberto Manzano recently released 10 predictions for the 2025 NFL Draft, projecting that the Seahawks could make a big move by trading with the Minnesota Vikings to secure Ewers. In this mock draft, the Vikings hold the No. 6 pick and, having drafted quarterback J.J. McCarthy earlier, might be willing to trade down. According to Manzano, the Seahawks would likely need to give up multiple picks, including a future first-rounder, to make the trade.

“With the Vikings drafting quarterback J.J. McCarthy in April, they were willing to trade down and accept the Seahawks’ offer of multiple picks with at least one future first-round pick,” Manzano wrote in his August 29, 2024 story titled “Way-Too-Early 2025 NFL Mock Draft: Our Top 10 Predictions.”

Manzano also noted that the Seahawks may already realize that Geno Smith isn’t a long-term solution at quarterback, no matter how he performs in 2024. While some might be surprised to see Ewers ranked higher than Shedeur Sanders, it’s possible Ewers could deliver a strong, consistent season at Texas and raise his draft stock.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith Is Heading Into a Prove-It Season With Mike Macdonald & Ryan Grubb

It’s too early to rule out Geno Smith as Seattle’s long-term quarterback solution. In fact, we may not have seen his full potential yet, especially with new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb stepping in. Grubb could help unlock Smith’s abilities this season, potentially elevating his performance.

However, it’s worth noting that Smith’s strongest supporter, Pete Carroll, is no longer with the team. Smith still has two years remaining on his three-year, $75 million contract, and how he performs this season will be pivotal. If Smith proves capable of leading Seattle to contention, he could be in line for a lucrative extension as soon as next offseason. But if he leaves the Seahawks with more uncertainty, the team may decide to start fresh with a new quarterback.

If Seattle decides to pursue a trade like the one outlined by Sports Illustrated, it would likely involve multiple future first-round picks—an aggressive move. In such a scenario, it’s crucial that the Seahawks choose the right quarterback prospect to justify the cost.

Potential Seahawks Target Quinn Ewers Was the No. 1 Rated Quarterback in the 2021 Class

Quinn Ewers’ draft stock is on the rise after an impressive 2023 season, where he threw for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, completing 69% of his passes. He also contributed 5 rushing touchdowns while leading Texas to the College Football Playoff.

Ewers, a former five-star recruit and the top-ranked player in the 2021 class, is now being viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects for the 2025 NFL Draft. According to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, Ewers is ranked as the No. 3 quarterback prospect behind Shedeur Sanders and Carson Beck. Brugler highlighted that Ewers delivered some of his best performances in high-stakes games, including matchups against Alabama, Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship, and Washington in the College Football Playoff.

“With his arm talent and experience (he’ll finish this season with almost 35 career starts), Ewers has first-round buzz among scouts, although his development in 2024 will ultimately determine where he is drafted in April,” Brugler wrote in a July 10 story titled, *2025 NFL Draft summer scouting: Can Shedeur Sanders, Quinn Ewers emerge from muddled QB class?*
