Vancouver Whitecaps FC made an announcement on Saturday revealing the signing of seasoned MLS goalkeeper Joe Bendik to a contract running through 2024, with an option for the club to extend it to 2025.

Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director, expressed satisfaction with the signing, stating, “We were seeking a goalkeeper with MLS experience, and Joe perfectly fits the profile we desired.” Schuster emphasized Bendik’s 12-year tenure in the league, highlighting his varied experiences with different clubs and the competition he will bring to the goalkeeper group. Bendik’s addition to the team was warmly welcomed by the club.

Bendik, sharing his thoughts on the move, expressed his excitement to begin this new chapter in Vancouver. He praised the city’s allure and expressed his eagerness to contribute positively to the team’s progress, building on their achievements from the previous season.

With 189 regular season appearances since his MLS debut in 2012, Bendik brings a wealth of experience to the Whitecaps. He most recently played for Eastern Conference side Philadelphia Union, where he spent four and a half seasons and contributed to their 2020 Supporters’ Shield victory.

Having also represented Columbus Crew, Orlando City SC, Toronto FC, and Portland Timbers in the league, Bendik’s professional journey began in Norway with Sogndal before he returned to the United States to join Portland. His collegiate career saw him play for Clemson University.

The transaction, finalized on February 17, 2024, marks Bendik’s commitment to Vancouver Whitecaps FC, with the goalkeeper poised to make his mark in the upcoming seasons.
