DONE JUST NOW: Four-star Safety Flips from Georgia Bulldogs to Texas Longhorns
Zelus Hicks, a highly regarded four-star junior safety from Carrollton, Georgia, initially considered extending his recruitment into the fall but ultimately committed to the University of Texas on Thursday, September 12. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect cited his positive experience working with the Texas coaching staff, particularly safeties coach Blake Gideon, as a major factor in his decision. Hicks praised Gideon’s hands-on coaching style and emphasized how Texas consistently produces top defensive backs.
Hicks’ family also played a role in his decision, expressing their love for Texas and even planning to relocate to the state when Hicks begins college. Notably, Hicks’ aunt, Faith Johnson, the former Dallas County District Attorney, has strong ties to the area.
Although Auburn was considered the frontrunner for much of the summer, Texas emerged as a top contender after hosting Hicks in April and June. He also considered other programs, including Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, and Tennessee.
Hicks is ranked as the No. 8 safety and the No. 79 overall prospect by 247Sports, and the No. 3 safety and No. 25 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He may reclassify to the 2025 class, which Texas would support, though that decision is still pending.
According to 247Sports analyst Hudson Standish, Hicks is a “modern boundary safety” known for his physical play, football instincts, and athleticism. He excels in tackling, taking excellent angles, and can handle both slot receivers and larger opponents. While he’s still refining his man-to-man coverage skills, Hicks has the potential to become a multi-year starter with NFL Draft upside.
