BREAKING: Miami signs another quarterback while mulling injured reserve for Tua Tagovailoa
The Miami Dolphins have yet to determine if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who sustained a concussion in Thursday night’s 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, will be placed on injured reserve. However, the team bolstered its quarterback depth on Monday by signing Snoop Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. Huntley, who has been with the Ravens since 2020, started nine games over the past three seasons when Lamar Jackson was sidelined due to injury.
With Tagovailoa’s injury, the Dolphins are left with Skylar Thompson as the starting quarterback and Tim Boyle from the practice squad. Miami coach Mike McDaniel emphasized that Huntley’s signing was not a reflection on Thompson’s role as Tua’s backup but rather a move to improve depth.
“This is more about adding depth,” McDaniel said. “It helps the room’s dynamics by bringing in a guy with starting experience. We were happy with Boyle, but this gives us more competition and stability behind Skylar.”
Tagovailoa’s status remains uncertain as there is no timeline for his return, and he will not be able to play until he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol. Miami’s next game is against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, and McDaniel noted that a decision on whether to place Tagovailoa on injured reserve will be made once they receive further medical evaluation.
“He was with us today, smiling and working with the medical staff,” McDaniel said. “He’s feeling good, but we’re taking things day by day.”
Tagovailoa’s concussion history, including two concussions in 2022 that caused him to miss five games, has raised concerns about his long-term future. Despite this, he returned to play in all 17 regular-season games in 2023, leading the NFL in passing yards.
